1         Bide your time – especially if you haven’t been in your present role for long. Timing is everything!

2         Know the market – check what the going market rate is for your position and location before you act. Here’s a good place to start!

3         Drop hints, but don’t issue an ultimatum. A subtle hint that you’re looking elsewhere may work – but an out and out threat to leave is less likely to be well received.

4         Do your homework – record your achievements and evidence your work. Use quantifiable data where you can.

5         Base your case on your own merits. ‘So-and-so just got a rise’ just comes across as sour grapes!

6         Take advantage of annual reviews and performance assessments to make your point – don’t go on the defensive.

7         Wait until after you’ve done something you’re particularly proud of before asking to speak to the boss. Recent accomplishments often count for more than historic success.

8         Get others on your side – mention recommendations from colleagues and emphasise your relationship with key team members.
