2019 TALENT TRENDS

It’s been a frenetic start to 2019 and the ‘war for talent’ across the tech sector is showing no sign of slowing. In the recently published Mills & Reeve Top Tech Yorkshire report there is a variety of the well-known players in the area mixed in with some amazing up and coming tech companies that we’re all expecting to hear a lot more about in the coming year.
It’s fascinating to see the creative ways everyone is adapting to the increased demand and ever-short supply of business-critical hires in digital. This ranges from company funds and days put aside purely for personal development, “pawternity” leave and the growing focus on perhaps the biggest buzzword in health at the moment – wellness. If this sounds a lot like fluff, have a look at why you should have a wellness scheme or policy from our friends over at Virgin Pulse – handily they have an office right here in Yorkshire.

STABILITY, STABILITY, STABILITY

The trend we have observed most of all in 2019 and over the last 12 months is the desire for stability. With our divorce from the EU looming, uncertainty is rife particularly for international businesses. From a talent perspective, we have seen the normal churn and plenty of roles at an operational, hands-on level but it seems a majority of businesses are tentatively waiting around to see what the future holds before bringing on senior leaders or drastically shifting in strategy. That being said, deal activity in Yorkshire has remained strong particularly in the tech sector and it seems there are new acquisitions and news of growth every week which in turn should create opportunities. If you want to do more to stand out amongst the growing crowd of tech companies in Yorkshire, have read through this guide.

It was sad to hear of the closure of British Ceramic Tile at the end of January. We’re actively working with a number of their digital, marketing and product team which were based in Cleckheaton and it’s good to see the wider Yorkshire community do what they can to help those affected. Fintech North – we love them! They do so much in bringing together tech communities to tackle issues around tech funding, talent solutions for developers etc. and sharing success stories.

They have a great event coming up: Fintech North Forum – Leeds – 27th February
